Focus on your “gardening enthusiast side” during this special two level programming event. For those of you who have requested an overview session, a “Meet the Natives” lecture will be presented by Joe Townsend on Thursday evening, February 18 from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m. During this free lecture in the LaVonne Nalley Piper Auditorium of the Pickens County Museum you will learn about some of the familiar and noteworthy native plants found in the Upstate. Come join us and celebrate the wonderful world of wildflowers, jewels of the Upcountry.

On Saturday February 20, Mr. Townsend will instruct a “Wildflower Propagation” workshop from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. using the Joe & Maggie Rampey Interpretive Gardens at the Pickens County Museum as the classroom. Registered participants will enjoy a hands-on opportunity to further their gardening abilities. Tuition for this workshop is $ 30 ($ 25 for museum members). Class is limited to 20 students and pre-registration is required. In this workshop students will learn to propagate their own wildflowers from seeds, cuttings, and division. Each student will learn proper seed storage, the meaning of seed stratification, and build a simple mist chamber for their stem cutting. To register for the workshop or for more information call the Pickens County Museum at 864.898.5027.

Joe Townsend has been appreciating and growing wildflowers for 20 years. He is the owner of WildSide Gardens, a native plant nursery located in the Six Mile area of Pickens County. He resides on a 24 acre farm where he lives off grid with solar power. This program is part of the museum’s continuing effort to provide a variety of entertaining and educational programming for the community. The Pickens County Museum of Art & History is funded in part by Pickens County, members and friends of the museum and a grant from the South Carolina Arts Commission, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Located at the corner of Hwy. 178 at 307 Johnson Street in Pickens SC, the museum is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Admission is free but donations are welcomed. For more information call the museum at (864) 898-5963.
