CLEMSON — Election officials just announced that Crossie Cox is the winner in a runoff election to decide who would fill a Clemson City Council seat vacated by Eloise James.

Cox defeated former school board member June Hay, taking more than 57 percent of the votes.

A total of 530 voters came out in support of Cox, compared to 399 who cast their vote for Hay.

About 14 percent of the registered voters in Clemson participated in the run-off election.

James resigned her seat after being suspended from council by Gov. Mark Sanford. The suspension and resignation came after she was indicted in October 2009 on charges of exploitation of a vulnerable adult, forgery and obstruction of justice.

The former council member said she is innocent of the charges.

Results are unofficial.
