Daniel boys, girls headed to state championship game

GREENVILLE—The Daniel boys and girls basketball teams swept the Lower Richland High School teams to take the AAA Upstate titles Saturday night.

The Lions boys team defeated Lower Richland 70-56. They will play Lake City High School in the AAA boys state title game Saturday in the Colonial Center in Columbia. Lake City defeated Darlington 76-73 Saturday night to win the Lowcountry AAA boys championship.

The Daniel girls defeated Lower Richland 59-46 Saturday night, ending the Diamond Hornets’ streak of AAA girls basketball state titles at four.

The Daniel girls will face Myrtle Beach Saturday for the state AAA championship. Myrtle Beach defeated Darlington 96-57 Saturday to win the Lowcountry AAA girls championship.

The Daniel boys got the job done with defense, particularly in the second quarter when the Lions held the Diamond Hornets to just one point. Daniel led 30-14 at halftime. Although Lower Richland outscored Daniel in each of the final two quarters by one point, it was enough to make a significant dent in the Lions lead.

Shaq Lawson led Daniel with 25 points. Justin Dotson added 19 and DeAndre Hopkins scored 13.

Others scoring for the Lions were Antonio Cannon 6, Cedrick Smith 3, D’Andre Draper 2 and Jemiah Wimphrie 2.

The Daniel girls dominated their game from the beginning, then held off a fourth quarter comeback attempt by the Diamond Hornets. The Lions led 19-9 after one quarter, and 30-17 at halftime.

By the end of the third quarter, Daniel’s lead was 47-26.

Daniel was led by Sherece Smith with 16 points. Anica Dotson scored 12 and Allison Droddy added 11. Others scoring for the Lions were Carley Hoover 8, Katie Schmidt 6, Layne Droddy 5 and Anna Qualkinbush 1.

The girls AAA state championship will begin 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Colonial Center. The boys AAA state championship game will follow, set to begin at 8:30 p.m.
