GREENVILLE — An upcoming race aims to raise funds for an organization that gives domestic violence victims a safe place to go to when they leave their abusers.

Officials with Safe Harbor encourage running enthusiasts and people through the Upstate to participate in this year’s Harbor Run.

The run is slated to begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 17, and will begin and end at Greenville’s Fluor Field Stadium.

Running not your speed? Not to worry: The 2010 Harbor Run includes both a certified 5K race and a 2-mile Fun Run/Walk. The courses will weave through Greenville’s Falls Park before returning to Fluor Field.

In addition to awards for fastest individual times, awards will also be given to the fastest family teams - husband/wife, mother/daughter, mother/son, father/daughter, and father/son.

Families are encouraged to participate in the Harbor Run to support victims and their children who have been affected by violence in their homes, officials said.

Safe Harbor is a non-profit organization that offers victims of domestic violence and their children safe shelters, counseling, advocacy and seeks to provide domestic violence prevention and education for the Upstate area.

After the race, participants are invited to wind down at a post-race party and silent auction at Smiley’s Acoustic Café, located at 111 August Street in the West End.

Participants with a Harbor Run race bib will receive one free drink, along with other refreshments.

Safe Harbor operates two shelters, one in Greenville and one in Anderson, but serves a four-county area, including Pickens and Oconee Counties.

In addition to operating its shelters and safe homes, Safe Harbor maintains a 24-hour emergency line that victims can call for assistance at 1-800-291-2139.

All proceeds from the Harbor Run will benefit Safe Harbor, supporting the organization’s many programs and services for victims of domestic violence and their children in Greenville, Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens counties.
