LIBERTY — Matt Whitworth of Liberty High School, has signed a national letter of intent to play baseball at Anderson University.

Whitworth has been a starter on the LHS varsity team since the eighth grade. He is a six-year letterman and a two-time all region player. He was named the Skyline Region Player of the Year in 2009. Last year, Whitworth batted .483 and led the team in nearly every offensive category.

Whitworth also represented the Upstate as a member of the S.C. District 1 baseball team in the 2009 Big League World Series.

“Matt has been a true leader on this year’s team and will be greatly missed next year,” LHS baseball Coach Scott Kerwin said.

Whitworth is a member of FCA and Beta Club at LHS. He is in the Teacher Cadet Program, a scholar athlete and was a Boys State Nominee.

He is also very active in his church youth group and helps with children’s church services.

Whitworth was also a four-year letterman and starter in football. He was named All-Region for three years in football.

Whitworth was LHS’s male Wendy’s High School Heisman nominee and is an honor roll student.
