LAKE HELEN, Fla. — U.S. Marshals have arrested a former Liberty resident wanted on charges of committing a lewd act upon children in Pickens County.

Anthony Florio, Jr., 44, formerly of 100 Brentwood Court, was arrested Wednesday, May 5 in Lake Helen, Fla., where he resided.

Florio is charged with one count of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, and two counts of committing or attempting a lewd act upon a child younger than 16.

Warrants were obtained against Florio in early April, authorities said.

The incidents involved three separate victims, police said.

According to a Pickens County Sheriff’s Office incident report, in April 2009, investigators met with an alleged victim, who told police that, six years earlier, the suspect had attempted to have sexual relations with her while she was spending the night at his residence visiting his stepdaughter.

Another alleged victim came forward after hearing of the first child, warrants state.

According to the assault warrant, the alleged incidents took place at Florio’s residence, on or around July 2008.

The lewd act charges stem from incidents alleged to have occurred between 2002 and 2007.

According to warrants, Florio is accused of placing the victims’ hands on his genitals and of touching them inappropriately.

U.S. Marshals arrested him, and he was held at the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office detention center until he was released Monday and transported to South Carolina, according to their public information officer Kim Cannaday.

Assistant Sheriff Tim Morgan said he was taken to the Pickens County Detention Center, where he awaited a bond hearing as of press time.
