Dr. John R. Simmons, 81, of 2923 Crowe Creek Road, Sunset, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, which occurred at 1:03 p.m. Thursday, County Coroner Kandy Kelley said.
The accident occurred as Simmons was traveling in the front passenger seat of a Chevy Aveo traveling on SC 288, 10 miles north of Pickens, said Lance Cpl. Scot Edgeworth of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred when a SUV driven by Everette D. Cox, 41, of Pickens, traveling west on SC 288, went left of center, striking the Aveo head-on in the eastbound lane.
Cox has been cited for felony DUI with death and driving under suspension, second offense, Edgeworth said.
The driver of the Aveo, Clinton McGaha of Six Mile, was transported by ambulance to Greenville Memorial for treatment of his injuries, Edgeworth said.
Another passenger in the car, Larry Durham of Six Mile, was also transported to Greenville Memorial for treatment
Both the Aveo driver and the second passenger were wearing seat belts, Edgeworth said.
Simmons was not wearing a seat belt, Kelley said.
Cox was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured in the accident,
Simmons was a retired dentist, Kelley said.
An autopsy was scheduled for Friday, she said.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the collision.
