STATE — A candidate considered a “dark horse” in the early days of the 2010 race to be the Republican nominee for governor nearly eliminated the need for a runoff election.

State Rep. Nikki Haley won 49 percent of the vote Tuesday night, but fell just short of capturing the needed 50 percent or more that could have made her the outright winner.

She’ll face Congressman Gresham Barrett in a runoff election June 22. Barrett won 22 percent of the vote.

The other two candidates in that race, Attorney General Henry McMaster and Lt. Governor Andre Bauer each captured less than 20 percent of the vote in Tuesday’s election, with McMaster winning 17 percent of the vote and Bauer earning 12 percent.

The winner of the June 22 runoff will face Democratic nominee Sen. Vincent Sheheen, who captured 59 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary, defeating Dr. Jim Rex, who won 23 percent of the vote and Sen. Robert Ford, who won 18 percent.
