Pickens – Mrs. Dorothy Mitchell Pittman, 82, retired educator in Pickens County and widow of C. Frank Pittman passed from this life Tuesday, May 8, 2010 at the McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville.

Mrs. Pittman was born in the York County, SC town of Sharon, a daughter of the late Robert and Ellen Greene Mitchell. She was retired from the Pickens County School District as a third grade teacher for most of her career at Ben Hagood Elementary School. She later became a guidance counselor for Ben Hagood, Holly Springs, and Pickens Elementary Schools. Her service to the children of Pickens County spanned three decades.

Mrs. Pittman was an active member of The First Baptist Church of Pickens where for many years she was a member of the choir. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Teacher’s Sorority, the YMCA Silver Sneakers, and the Pickens County Historical Society where she was a guide at the historic Hagood Mauldin House in Pickens. Mrs. Pittman was also a member Upcountry Quilters Guild, and the Quilters of South Carolina.

She was a graduate of Gardner Webb College, Furman University with a BA Degree in education and later in life received hers Masters Degree from Clemson University.

Survivors include her son, Timothy Frank Pittman (Kaye) of Simpsonville and daughter Sylvia Pittman Neusch (Richard) of Austin, TX. Also surviving are grandchildren Adrienne and Jared Neusch and Kade Pittman and sister Faye Blair of Mt. Pleasant, SC.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 AM Friday at the First Baptist Church of Pickens with entombment following at Hillcrest memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Thursday at Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Cannon Hospital Foundation, Digital Mammography Fund Raising Campaign, PO Box 188, Pickens, SC 29671.
