UPSTATE — Jeff Duncan squeezed by political newcomer Richard Cash to earn the Republican Party’s nomination for the U.S. House District 3 seat in Tuesday’s runoff election.

Duncan had 51.5 percent of the votes, while Cash had 48.5. The actual vote difference was 2,171.

Results remain unofficial until Thursday. If Cash were to pull within two percent of Duncan through failsafe votes, a recount would be ordered by state election laws.

Duncan will face Democrat Jane Dyer in the November general election for the seat currently held by Rep. Gresham Barrett. Barrett chose to pursue the Governor’s office instead of seeking re-election. He was defeated soundly in Tuesday’s runoff election by Nikki Haley.
