PICKENS — The congregation of a local church will once again help Pickens celebrate Independence Day with a special event in downtown Pickens.

July 4, 2010 marks the twelfth year that East Pickens Baptist Church has hosted the city’s July 4th celebration.

The celebration kicks off at 2 p.m. Sunday.

This year’s “Pickens Celebrates the Fourth” event will once again be held on Main Street.

Church officials said that the congregation hopes the July 4 celebration will encourage, promote and nurture the spiritual well-being of Pickens County, by honoring God — the author and founder of our great nation — and honoring the men and women who are presently serving or have served in the defense of the United States of America.

The family-friendly event allows residents to enjoy all-ages fun without breaking the family budget.

The free children’s area will offer popcorn, sno-cones, a bounce house, carnival games and face-painting.

Talented members of East Pickens Baptist will be entertaining the crowd from the soundstage.

Be sure to bring a chair so you can enjoy the fun!

All entertainment is free.

The only cost associated with the event is a $5 pass which allows all-day access to the amusement rides that will be set up on Main Street.

Work up an appetite? Vendors will be selling hot dogs, hamburgers, French fries, corndogs, funnel cakes and drinks.

Church officials promise that the Fourth of July celebration will come to a close with “the grandest, most spectacular fireworks display in the area” — launching at 10 p.m.

The fireworks, compliments of the City of Pickens, will be launched from the Pickens High School football stadium so the whole city can enjoy the show

For more information, please contact East Pickens Baptist Church at 878-4510.

The church is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m
