The library will be located at the intersection of Hwy. 183 and Hwy. 137 at 2536 Walhalla Hwy. in Six Mile.
Brenda Rippy of the library committee said they are now looking for volunteers every Saturday during the month of July to get the building ready.
“We are looking for volunteers for clean up, painting, mowing, driveway preparation and book cataloging,” she said.
Rippy said the library location was made possible by a group of citizens who stepped up to the plate.
Those citizens are Jimmie Haynes, Ellen Haynes, Stacy Haynes, Brenda Trotter, Ola Porter and Margaret Batson.
She also said several library groups and other organizations have stepped up to help make the library possible: Pickens County Literacy Group, Easley Library, Richland County Literacy Group in Columbia, Rural Library Systems in Atlanta, Six Mile residents and the Pickens County Democratic Party.
“We are so thankful to these groups that have made donations and come together to help out this great cause for the residents of Six Mile,” Rippy said.
The building chosen for the library is 1,170 square foot. It is being leased to the library for one year at a rate of $225 per month plus utilities.
“It’s a cute building,” said Rippy.
“We just need volunteers now to help us. We are very excited. This is wonderful news for the town of Six Mile.”
Rippy said Pickens County would like to see the library supported by the residence for some time before they pick it up under the Pickens County Library Systems.
Once Pickens County is interested in picking up the library as a part of their group, Rippy said she would have no problem turning the library over to the county.
“This is our goal,” she said.
During the June council meeting, council voted to turn over an old computer and copier to the library.
They currently have more than 3,000 books.
“We have to start somewhere,” Rippy said. “We do believe it’s time for Six Mile to have a library. This is a way to get it started and to bring the community together.”
The library committee is asking for volunteers each Saturday of July.
The group will begin work at 7:30 a.m.
Rippy said a tentative date for the community library’s opening will be the end of August or beginning of September.
She said they are in need of more children’s books.
