PICKENS – A trial of the 51-year-old Pickens man who pleaded guilty to murder began Monday in the May 2009 shooting death of his roommate.

Gary Clinton Mayfield, of 894 Meece Mill Rd., Pickens, was charged with murder of 74-year-old Claude Julius Burrell of the same address, after police say he shot his roommate in the back of the head after having an argument.

Arrest warrants said the argument was over money.

Warrants also stated drugs and alcohol were involved in the altercation between the two men.

Mayfield was sentenced to 35 years in the S.C. Department of Corrections and given credit for time served. Mayfield has not been released since being arrested in May 2009.

Pickens County officials say Burrell was letting Mayfield stay in his home on Meece Mill Rd. when he went into Burrell’s room and got his .22 caliber bolt action rifle then shot him in the head.

Mayfield was arrested the next day. Police said Mayfield’s son, a third roommate, arrived home and found Burrell lying in the floor.

A 911 call came in at around 12:30 a.m. reporting a shooting.
