PIEDMONT—The Lady Hurricanes have their eyes set on a banner.

The Wren High girls’ basketball team has now won 13 straight games, including its most recent and most important playoff win over Clinton Monday night.

The topped ranked Hurricanes took care of business in round one, putting together a solid defense effort to end Clinton’s season with a 65-37 victory.

Wren stormed out of the gate, relying on hot shooting during its 22-6 run in the opening period. After holding Clinton to just 11 points in the second quarter, the Hurricanes took a commanding 35-17 heading into the break.

After the half, Wren continued its dominance with a 23-point third quarter effort. The Hurricanes held Clinton to just three points in the third period, sealing the victory and a trip to the second round.

Senior Addie Merritt had the big night for Wren with a staggering 23 points in the contest. The senior also brought down four rebounds and dished out four assists.

Senior Danielle Matthews also had big offensive night for the hurricanes, contributing 16 of her own to the effort. Junior Allie Wagner added eight and senior Brook Irvin scored seven.

The top-ranked Hurricanes faced second-seeded Berea in round two on Thursday (results were not available at press time).

Looking ahead, Wren has its work cut out. If they are fortunate enough to make it past Berea on Thursday, the Hurricanes could face a possible third round matchup with second-seeded Dreher. A win there would take Wren to the final four, hosted at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville each year.
